Book Exchange, Book Swap and
Textbook Classifieds

Although you can occasionally find a great deal from a book exchange or textbook swap, these present many risks you need to be wary of. Swaps and exchanges usually don’t attract a large enough number of buyers and sellers to create an efficient market. Many of the books listed tend to be from students who were offered no money at buyback because of a new edition being released, or significant damage to their book.

I would only recommend using sites like these as a last resort. If you do decide to make a purchase, make sure a safe method of online payment is available. Again, understand you’re not likely to have the opportunity for a refund if you need it.

Classified online sites like Craig’s List are high risk for the same reasons. I don’t recommend buying a book from a classified sight unseen. If you use Craig’s List, only buy from a seller in your area. Then ask to meet the seller in a highly visible public place to first view the book and confirm the condition and edition before committing to the purchase. This strategy increases your safety and saves you from having to pay any shipping charges.
