College Bookstore Book Reserve: How it Works
The college bookstore attempts to seduce the student into using their book reserve program on the merits of its convenience, as well as an opportunity to buy scarce used textbooks. Often times the store will even offer a discount or some other incentive to close the deal. Once the student elects to sign up they turn over their class schedule along with all of their control in the process.
To sign up, the student fills out a form before the term starts listing their class schedule, or permission for the store to obtain it from the registrar. The form will contain the usual questions as well as some questions making the student feel as if they are in control over the process.
The student will be offered choices such as new or used textbooks, and optional study guides or required materials only. During the sign up process the college bookstore often takes the opportunity to offer a generic kit of school supplies, as well as a school sweatshirt or other insignia items. If it’s Mom or Dad's credit card, why not load it up. After all, it’s all going to appear in the name of education right?
