Get Involved
College Parents of America need to be involved in developing their students shopping habits for textbooks. When the parents are footing the bill for their child's textbooks, that student will put in a minimal effort towards research and shopping. These students opt for the greatest personal convenience and end up saving little if any of their parents hard earned money. In fact, many of these students end up costing their parents money!
Parents often allow the student to sell their books back at the end of the term and keep the proceeds as a reward for a long semester of hard work. There’s nothing wrong with this practice, except these students often develop the belief that the more money they spend up front, the more they’ll get back at the end of the semester. These students begin to shun used books in favor of new, and purchase the optional books as well hoping for a big cash payday at the end of the term.
Worse yet, I’ve seen students buy books they didn’t need with a pre-signed check from Mom and Dad. Then turn around and bring the books back in before the deadline expires for a full cash refund! Entrepreneurship 101? Creative thinking maybe, but where does it go from there? It’s better to use a credit card to purchase your students books. Stores don’t give cash refunds on credit card purchases, and you can monitor your students spending from the statement.
