Free College Textbooks
There’s a handful of websites offering access to free college textbooks online. These are typically E-book versions of titles in the public domain, or titles that authors have allowed permission for online viewing. Some of these sites allow you to view the text right on their website, and others will require an updated version of
Adobe's free pdf reader.
You may find you’re asked to register, participate in a survey or make a voluntary donation to some of these sites. If that’s a drawback for you, consider the cost savings versus buying the book new. If you can find even one needed book for free, it can put you way ahead in the cost savings game.
The disadvantage of these free E-book sites is the lack of availability of current edition textbooks. You’ll have good luck finding free books if you're studying Literature or Philosophy. For most other majors you’ll be hard pressed to find your books available for free, but here’s a list of websites offering the largest selection of titles for you to search:
Project Gutenberg
Bartleby
Freeload Press
Textbook Revolution
The Internet Public Library
Online Mathematics Textbooks
Now we’ll examine the previous edition of a text as an alternative:
