Textbooks Online from Internet Auctions
When you’re searching for textbooks online at Internet auction sites like eBay, you’ll find sellers hoping to see the price of their used textbook bid up by motivated buyers. Like many online choices, auction sites present several risks that need to be factored.
One of the problems you face with these sites is the wait time for the auction to end if there’s no “buy it now” option. If you win the auction you’re now at the mercy of the seller as to when they’ll actually ship the book. If you lose the auction, you’re out the time invested and have to start your search all over again.
Before bidding on a textbook you need to determine the maximum price you’re willing to pay relative to buying from the local bookstore or another online retailer. Shipping costs and/or sales tax need to be figured into the final cost of your purchase price to make fair comparisons.
In most cases you’re buying textbooks online from another individual who may not be dedicated to their Internet business. Because of this you need to check the sellers rating and feedback comments. You’ll want to find someone who has a decent history of selling and following through for past customers. You should also send the seller an e-mail asking them to confirm the edition and condition of the book. Then ask if they’re including any relevant supplements with the book such as a CD or unused Internet pass code. The speed of the response and quality of the answers will help you assess your risk in buying textbooks online from this seller.
Be aware that often times students who were not offered any money at buyback are attempting to sell damaged books and old edition textbooks this way; you’re not likely to be offered any refund privileges from an individual on an auction site.
