School-Sponsored Leased University Bookstore
If the school-sponsored university bookstore at your campus is leased out to a private company, like Barnes and Noble or Follett, they’ll be trying to operate efficiently and may be more sensitive to local price competition. Some of their cost efficiency may come in the form of less staff, so you may have trouble getting good service when you shop at this type of store. These stores usually have a pretty good on-campus location, so you may still be faced with higher prices for the convenience. The money being generated at these large company private stores is helping support local employees, but the revenues are probably leaving the local economy.
Approximately 35% of the college bookstores around the nation are structured this way. If the University doesn't own your school sponsored store, it's probably this type of operation.
