Institutional University Bookstores

The school-sponsored university bookstores represent about 50% of college bookstores nation-wide. If the university operates the school-sponsored store at your campus, it’s not likely to offer the most competitive pricing. School owned stores typically run less efficiently and have to charge higher prices to cover their additional costs.

The customer service at institutional bookstores will be a hit and miss proposition depending on the management and morale of the staff. Revenues here will help support the local employees, and if there's anything left over it usually goes towards offsetting student fees. If you don’t feel like your contributing enough to your university through tuition, and you don’t mind rewarding operational inefficiencies, then you're probably not going to mind paying the higher prices at the institutional bookstore serving your campus.
